Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard announced her debut solo album on Tuesday (June 25). The LP, called Jaime, is set to be released on Sept. 20 via ATO.
The announcement comes along with the album’s lead single, “History Repeats,” which exhibits Howard’s jazzy side. It’s funky and warm and, while it may sound more dialed down than usual, the politically-charged message behind it is most certainly not.
The album is named after Howard’s sister, who died from cancer when the two were teenagers. “The title is in memoriam, and she definitely did shape me as a human being,” Howard said in a statement via social media. “But, the record is not about her. It’s about me. I’m pretty candid about myself and who I am and what I believe. Which is why I needed to do it on my own.”
She will also take the record on tour, which kicks off on Aug. 17 in North Carolina and wraps on Oct. 13 in Georgia.
